I feel it would be an honour to get Argentina in the group stages. Considering the last four World Cup's for Scotland ('82, '86, '90, '98), we got Brazil in our group three times

I was gonna mention the same group stage as Brazil the last time ('98), but for a moment I completely forgot that the teams were matched in the same group in '82 and '90 also! So crazy...

It's funny enough getting Brazil again, as @crustcyb & @pogoss say, but Morocco as well? Haiti is the only difference from the '98 group 🤣 Hopefully an omen that Brazil will make a final again

Yeah, also forgot Morocco was in the same group in 98 also... Lucky for both Brazil and Scotland (and also Morocco), Norway fell in another group :LOL:

But seriously, Brazil NT's in shambles... there's absolutely no midfielder apart from Casemiro and Bruno Guimarães. I like Ancelotti, sure... But not much he can do about it, the whole NT "culture" was messed up by Neymar (and other political stuff I don't wanna get into details here), especially in the last WC (2022) where he took his entire entourage with him (staying in the same hotels) and all the rest of the team felt they were also entitled to it. It's pathetic... The guy's an influencer, he's no football player. I mean, even with Ancelotti leaving him out of the final list (big chance this will happen, and for the best), the damage has been done already. FUBAR. Never before a better chance for Scotland (and also Morocco) to beat Brazil in the group stage.

It's unfortunate to hear. I grew up with R9 as the best in the world, Brazil with Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Gilberto Silva. Truly exquisite players who always played with that Brazilian flair. Seeing the downfall of Brazil is sad to see as they were always ome of the world's best. Germany too have fallen since 2014. It would be good to see these giants rise again once more, and maybe a lack of Neymar might help that (a talented, but difficult guy, for sure)

I mean, it's not even a matter of "names" or how many talented players the team got... Even in 2014 (the "7x1 thrashing by Germany cup"), the team had great names. But as I said, it was just too dependent on Neymar, and not only technically: When he went out injured, the whole team crumbled emotionally (which just CAN'T happen). If you see Fred's interview (the former Lyon / Fluminense CF, not Galatassaray's / former Man Untd's current CMF), the dude is literally holding back tears when he's informed Neymar was out of the tournament... You just CAN NOT depend on one player exclusively.

But now it's way worse, 'cause now it's both (emotionally uncapable and lack of good players). Brazil have aging goalkeepers (Alisson and Ederson), and none of them are even good penalty savers (including Neto here), ZERO sidebacks whatsoever, especially when you compare it with players cited (Cafu and Roberto Carlos) and not cited (like Daniel Alves and Marcelo)... Wesley (Roma) is young and unproven and Caio Henrique (Monaco) is just not good enough. And those two ARE IT. No backup side-backs. Ancelotti will probably call up Wesley, and if he somehow gets injured, Ancelotti will most certainly improvise Éder Militão at the right-back (because all other right-backs are just plain bad). No attacking midfielders whatsoever (NONE!). No reliable CF: Richarlison has been bad for a while now and Pedro (Flamengo's) is ALWAYS injured. So ends up that the most talented players are wingers (obviously Vini Jr, Raphinha and even Martinelli), but they're VERY inconsistent... So yeah, major problems all throughout the whole lineup.

The only thing that's left for Brazil is the "mystique"... ya know, the yellow shirt and the tradition.

But whatever, this topic is about SCOTLAND. Talking about Brazil's is just straying off-topic, so I'll stop here ; )

I guess since Scotland is a future opponent, it's ok here.

Could argue the same happened at the 1998 WC Final with R9. That Brazil team should've probably won that trophy, but just didn't appear. Probably affected by R9's 'unusual morning' (I'll call it that to be nice & not too insensitive, as personally, R9 is one of my favourite players of all time)

I've read SO MANY conspiracy theories about what happened that day... I mean, it obviously affected the whole team, but I'm not sure if Brazil would've won, even if Ronaldo was fine. France ALWAYS "had Brazil's number", for quite a while now. Plus, they were playing at home, and Blatter was always a crook. But I'll never discredit France winning that title. They deserved it.

Oh, about the conspiracy, the "best" one I've ever heard was that Ronaldo found out that his then girlfriend (I forgot her name, it's the blond one that married Julio César - Inter Milan's former GK - some time later) was "fooling around" with a prestigious Brazilian reporter behind his back. After I heard about it, I remember thinking like, "it's not that absurd...". I also clearly remember (I was 19 years old at the time) that every single halftime of every game Brazil played (before the final, that is), there was the reporter dude (and he's always been famous for being a "womanizer") interviewing the girl. Seriously: EVERY. SINGLE. HALFTIME. And they were both real "mushy" with each other, it was noticeable. Ronaldo most likely found out somehow, or someone told him (or who knows? Maybe some teammate joked about it, and he took it seriously). He couldn't take it (he was very young, after all), probably snapped / freaked out, and then he convulsed...

It's obviously all hearsay, and as you, I don't think it's sensitive to bring back the subject, as Ronaldo is also one of my favorite players of all time. And he totally redeemed himself in 2002 with a memorable World Cup, so... It's all "barbershop talk" and kind of interesting, nevertheless.

I've heard that theory myself recently.

It's interesting that Scotland went out of the group stage of that World Cup, yet lost only 2-1 to Brazil (one being an own goal). I was 7 at that time however, so this will be my first World Cup seeing Scotland as an adult 😂 (The 1990 WC was a few months before I was born)

Agree with it all !
Talking about Scotland they have a good midifield and good side backs from what I see, but the GK, CB and FWs are not on the same level.

Hanley and McKenna were also involved in the Ukraine match where Scotland lost their playoffs for the 2022 World Cup (McKenna was on the bench).

(Bonus Fun Fact: Hanley made his debut in May 2011 & McKenna in March 2018. Also, McKenna is from a small town where my dad currently lives)

The GK situation is the same in that Craig Gordon is an excellent goalkeeper, but he is 42 years old. As he'll be 43 at the time of the World Cup, he'll become the second oldest player to ever play at a World Cup. He made his Scotland debut in May 2004. The next oldest GK is 34 year-old Scott Bain, who was at Celtic, but spent most of the time on the bench. He now plays for Falkirk. So a definite weak point.

As for FWs, there's no "World-Class" players like a McTominay or a McGinn. But I'm sure also it wont be the weakest line-up at the tournament. The unfortunate thing for Scotland is that a small percentage of our talent is at the top level. The rest are in the English Championship or low-end Scottish clubs.

They will no doubt give it their all though, the tenacious Scottish grit and determination will shine through, I'm sure. And I'm curious what Steve Clarke does in terms of young talent (like 2006, when England picked a very young Theo Walcott). If they are fit in time, I'm sure the likes of Lennon Miller and Billy Gilmour will feature (believe they're both injured at the moment). There's also talk that Newcastle winger Harvey Barnes could play for Scotland through grandparents.
