The Retro FIFA Discussion Thread (All FIFA games by EA are welcome!)

It took this (and the fantastic videos in this thread) to convince me to revisit the Xbox version and give the PC version a break.

My God, I'd forgotten how good it was. It breaks my heart how far (backwards) we've come.

I have a Be A Pro save on there that's one of my favourites ever, and my very first game back after 5-6 years, from kick off, the AI and I gel together like humans would.

I play as a striker pushing the defensive line, and at the very moment I think about making a run, the AI plays THIS pass (and by the way, I didn't even request it, which makes the AI spectacular IMO):

It's so organic, and so realistic, and so wonderful.

The AI now is so poor that, in Be A Pro modes, you only get the ball either when you're completely alone or (99/100 times) when you request it.

The ball weight is consistent, it's never manipulated for the sake of "fun", and so when this happens, it feels amazing.

Plus, my shot is dreadful, but it's ALLOWED to be. The game isn't holding my hand, and the outcome is the result of the ball physics as much as my attributes and controller input.

If only it has tournament modes etc. on it so I could play it with friends.

I've never played Be a Pro. I think I'd love it, if the AI play like this, I've gotta try it.

Be a Pro has same vibe as Pro Clubs and I'm the biggest Pro Clubs fan. I believe it has the potential to make EA even more millions extra, if they expanded it to include real-time tournaments, EPL, cups etc, Pro transfer market and fees, Esports scene.

I stopped playing Clubs many years ago once FIFA destroyed the gameplay, but FIFA 09-17 + Pro Clubs was fantastic.

Fifa 16 modded ball physics and speedhack 0.92
Vs sevilla at home, the crowd was really enjoying this, it was marking messi s 200 game as a barca player, hugo loris was on top of his game in this match, finished 1-0 credit to the superlative finishing of luis suarez.

Away vs sociedad at anoeta, a match that can be real tricky especially since sociedad have been rising up the table in the past few weeks, a brilliant messi freekick from 30 yards out wrapping up a commanding show

going purely off gameplay i think most people will say fifa 10

definitely avoid fifa 08
Nah, FIFA 08 and Euro 2008 were both good games, but a little rough. Especially since Euro 2008 introduced a passing bar and more control over the weight of passes.
FIFA 09 was a nice improvement in every area. Both have a very nice and realistic flow as well. Compared to today, both games were almost hardcore sims. Funny that PES did the opposite and went more arcadey with PES2008 and 2009.

I agree that Fifa 10 is probably the best. It felt much smoother, but was still having a more realistic approach. Back then me and friends (5-6 people) used to do PES tournaments at my place a few times a Week. We (of course) played PES5 and PES6 for years. But FIFA 10 was the first time that everyone of us was impressed with a game, that was not PES 5 or 6. The day I bought FIFA 10, we played that game for hours and forgot time, because we had such a great time with it. :D

I'm not saying fifa 08 is bad, i absolutely loved it at the time as it felt like a breath of fresh air after a decade of pes but i went back and played it recently and although it's still enjoyable i found it a bit clunky with a fair amount of button delay. They really tightened things up over the next few iterations

i know the 2010 world cup game wasn't mentioned in the original question but I'd say that aged well and is worth trying today too

Can you record 1 minute or so of whatever gameplay? I just want to see how it flows, there doesn't have to be a goal or anything.

FIFA 14 again! This time I'm showing you how bad it is, and that's good.

77 minutes into my 1st ever European game with Leicester and yeah nothing has happened at all, the whole game.

Crazy scrappy, feels like a very British battle in the wind and rain of Dundee. All missed passes, bad touches, lots of ball in the air. Love it.

FIFA 12 PC - initially recorded because this curled through ball is majestic. After watching playback, all of the movement and actions after seem so lifelike: strong challenge that Goetze brushes off, some nice headers and battle for the ball.

First since 06, you mean, considering the 360 version of 06 was more of a proof of concept with the whole Road to World Cup thing (not that it was bad or anything, mind you). PC 11 was 7th gen too, but it was essentially just FIFA 10 with the 11 database.
I'll have to give it to them, though, that they thought of people who couldn't afford top-of-the-line computers by basing off the 6th gen versions for a while. And hey, they had great Career Modes.

FIFA 06 pc port was not on par with the og xbox port either. It was missing several visual effects:

1. Depth of field.
2. Post processing effects: This is why night, rainy matches looked completely different on ps2 and xbox compared to pc.
3. 3D grass: The most baffling downgrade on pc port. Because FIFA 2004 and 2005 actually had 3D grass on pc port and it actually had better draw distance on pc compared to xbox. But they remove it on 06 [the lod config files still mentioned 3D grass. It almost feels like the removal was accidental. Unfortunately they never brought it back for 06 wc and 07.]

FIFA 04 and 05 weren't on par either. As usual, DOF effect was missing. But FIFA 04 had missing lighting effect on player models, the grass texture was significantly dark on pc port that it was absurd [compensating by changing gamma values makes rest of the objects like players, crowds too bright.]. 05 had missing specular maps on pc as well.

FIFA 2001-03 pc ports were downgraded too. But the list will go on. So yeah, FIFA 12 was the first time the PC port was on par with consoles ever since FIFA 99.

Confusingly, on PC, FIFA 12 seems to have better graphics than 13 and 14.

FIFA 14 old gen ports were an embarrassment. Gameplay was nice and all but they downgraded the visuals twice. The early previews had best visuals and then they downgraded it before releasing the demo. Then they further downgraded it in the final retail version which looked worse than demo. Importing the jersey normal map files from demo to final retail release does not solve the problem completely because the shaders are botched on retail release.

Lately i recieved this game that i wanted when i was a kid at his released and as i'm into the World Cup 2006 mood i wanted to replay the WC Qualifiers 2006 with this game.

This game have the whole European nations with their official kit and group stage, i took France and for more realism i don't want to use Thuram, Makelele and Zidane as they have announced their retirement after the Euro 2004 before they came back in August 2005.

The gameplay is... not pleasant to play as expected, because it was the very first try of EA trying to make an HD video games on the early new gen, so it was kinda experimental. But still fun to play for those kids who was living football at that time.

And i bought it because the 2006 World Cup mean a lot to me.
Visuals, cutscenes and animations remains unmatched to this day. Wish we got another game with the same visuals and cutscenes but with FIFA 16 gameplay and more teams.

That 3D grass draw distance though, I don't even think it fades out at all. It's fully drawn the whole field.

I've came to the conclusion 14 on pc is the worst looking Fifa of all times. It's a shame cause gameplay is really solid in my opinion, but colors, details... it's all so off putting.

up against real.madrid in the copa del rey semi final.second.leg, after winning the first leg 2-1 at home, comes the return leg to see who.makes it to the elusive final, it finished 1-1 , barca will be facing valencia in the final of the copa del rey

please compare both videos. ball and players are not that slow in real life. making gameplay slower does NOT mean that it becomes realistic.

this gameplay is more like slowmotion and emphasis unnecessarly.

Ok give.me.your suggestion then on better than 0.92 speedhack??? I m open ears, the game is like on steroids without speedhack and slow in game setting...

@EauRouge seems to me mate you don t have answer right, because this is anth james recommendation to play the game, there s no other solution other than speedhack mate, and there s no better game out there at the moment, let s be honest about it instead of nitpicking

You can slow down the tempo without a speedhack by using the sliders for passing and shooting speed, running speed, and acceleration, or by combining a speedhack with the sliders. But for me, the biggest problem with high pace in FIFA is the unnaturally fast movements of players, such as turning with the ball, and there's no other way to fix that than with a speedhack. For me, this is the most important tool for FIFA games. In FIFA 16, I even enjoyed playing on 0.88 :)Besides, gameplay watched on YT usually seems slower than it actually is

The speedhack is for the overall slowing down of pace, 0.88 becomes slow motion, 0.92 is the perfect balance with anthjames sliders

I choose my speedhack value based on the sliders, mods, and cl.ini files I'm currently using, as different combinations yield different tempo. I've also been playing at 0.92 recently, and I'm currently playing FIFA 17 at 0.92 as well.

Huh, I never noticed those. I REALLY could use a hands-on comparison.
The other day some guy on YouTube reamed on me because he had said 12 was the first FIFA to use the seventh-gen engine on PC and I replied to pointed out that 11 did too, and then he wrote a spiel about how I was trying to misinform people by making him look misinformed because 11 on PC didn't use the gameplay innovations of the PS3/360 and all that.
Maybe I could really use some education on that. I'm still too stunned to reply either way.

11 on PC is actually the first "7th gen" game on PC, let's make this clear immediately.
It's, however, pretty much the same as FIFA 10 for Xbox One with updated assets and rosters, so I think it's this that he refers to when he says that "it's not using the same gameplay innovations" (indeed it has the GK problem on crosses/long balls that FIFA 10 on Xbox One had, and it misses the "new penalty mechanics" that got introduced on PS3/Xbox One with 2010 World Cup game).

The guy who commented on youtube is right. FIFA 11 PC port while did finally get next gen engine, it was actually FIFA 10 x360 with updated rosters and change in grass color/ lighting. If you play FIFA 11 on ps3 and xbox 360, you will immediately notice that the gameplay feels a lot more similar to FIFA 12 on the consoles. The player movements are the most obvious ones. The in game cinematics are also better on consoles.

Being that said, the pc port did not look worse than the consoles. In a way, it was better than consoles in few things [aside from your usual PC performance advantages]:

1. Cloth models were still based on FIFA 10 x360 models. So they had those more curvy cloth like look compared to the cylindrical garbage you see on FIFA 12 onwards.

2. Cloth physics were also significantly better on PC port because of it being based on FIFA 10. The shirts still bounched, albeit not as much as FIFA 07/08. It was still there unlike x360 fifa 11 where the shirts did not move at all and remained like that for rest of the x360 FIFA games. Only the shorts moved.

3. 3D grass was still visible on instant replays. Not that it amount to much, because in other cinematics like match intro, goal celebrations the 3D grass was not there at all. So it's actually a huge downgrade compared to previous two PC ports of FIFA [09 and 10] which had 3D grass always visible and looked really nice. This one thing made FIFA games on consoles look like ass compared to PES.

And while PC port did not get the same gameplay changes from FIFA 11 console, it was still based on FIFA 10 console, which in itself had a very decent gameplay. It actually does feel better in some ways.

etc etc. If I were to point out all the downgrades in other FIFA games, this will take several more paragraphs. So maybe I will save that up for another day. But yeah, in short, the PC ports were downgraded most of the time. EA should be ashamed of themselves for making such garbage on PC. Then again, it's EA. They have no sense of quality, nor do they have any shame.

Aye, I could see that as I played. But I did like both of them on my 360, and I liked that at least the PC had finally moved into the current generation (what with how hideous 10 looked on it). So I didn't mind, even though I preferred 11 on the 360.
And credit where it's due, at least EA apparently thought of the players who didn't have the most powerful computers around that time of the later 00s; maybe that's why it took them so long to roll out the Impact engine on PC, and when they did they pulled what we'd later know as the "Legacy Edition" stunt. Which is one thing I can speak higher of them than of Konami (I remember how PES 3 would chug along if you didn't have a top-of-the-line machine back in 2004, and even later still with the seventh-gen and Fox Engine games) and some other publishers (coughrockstarcough).
