The Retro-PES Corner

Here the version made by Konami for Sega Saturn, it's not called any Victory Goal or Worldwide Soccer

J. League Jikkyou Honoo no Striker (1998) SEGA Saturn

Gameplay looks pretty bad.

Yes it's created probably by the one from KCEO, Iss 64, 2000 etc., even if i don't know if the team get already separated at the time.
I honestly prefers a just good/not bad "Victory Goal" than that....

Note/Edit
I think they wanted to do something not looking neither to Iss or Iss Pro, then they didn't really managed how to make a game on that weird console "architectural" programming, that's often why a lot of devs rarely gived a damn about Saturn.... Even some SEGA ports are pretty bad, execpt Sega Rally which was outstanding at the time and Virtua Fighter 2 in high def. i don't even know if a Playstation would have supported it, but except those two jewels....
Better to play 2,5D or 2D games on that console (for why it was designed first... Something i still don't understand as it was Sega idea, took by Sony, to launch games in full 3D when they released VR and VF while building a console not enable to handle 3D > "we will add 2 processor then" lol)

But overall, Virtua Racing 32x > VR Saturn version for example. No blinking polygons everywhere (same for Virtua Fighter but they rectified it with on the Remix version)

PES 3 and 5 really are king. I’d narrowly give it to 3 because of the slightly more complete package on the pitch.

Shooting physics: 3>6>5>4
Variety/randomness: 3>5>4>6
Match pacing/balance of response : 3>5>4>6
Passing physics: 5>3>4>6
AI difficulty & variety: 3>4>6>5
Presentation style: 3>5>6>4
Player individuality: 5>3>4>6
Animations: 3>5>6>4
PES 3 feels very modern. I can’t really explain why. Maybe it’s the freedom of movement?

download---> Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 PS2 version ISO...

My question is strictly out of curiosity and i dont want to come off as nosey etc

Some time ago you mentioned that you worked on improved ISO of J.LeagueWE2008CC, is that something that you plan on releasing?
Yes! Apologies for the delay. We ran into two critical game crashing bugs. Just this week we managed to fix both of them. Now it’s just a small issue (slight inconvenience really) with the 2D minikits. I won’t give a firm date but it’s very close now.

My favourite was PES5/WE9. I have been playing 3 on PS2 last days and maybe it becomes my new favourite. I have to play more to decide.

PES3 plays like a dream:
- Ball physics are on par with 5. Shots and passes are very satisfying.
- Dribbling is not too loose or tight, feels right. Collisions have some physicality unlike 6 or 2008
- Attacking AI seems better than 5, while defending AI is tight.
- Referee seems perfectly tuned, not so many fools as 5, but quite a bit more than 6 or 2008 where too few are sanctioned.
- Good crosses and head shots.
- Slower game pace than 6 or 2008. A bit faster than 5. Perfect IMO.

Seems like an underlooked entry compared to the most populars.

Then you should play Winning Eleven 7 international as it's an improved version of WE7/ PES 3.

Bro i got to ask as i wanted to work on JL2008 too, but in PM.
My goal was to reproduce my Bundesliga (enhanced since the time) instead of Eredivisie, and i got a system/tutorial to assign preset kits on unlincenced teams. But you can't add litterally a kit for every team : the idea was to select teams with kits easy to made. And oh yes if you know about "kitslayers" or modded design for having real kits on Premier League for example i was tempted to use it. Thanks to @marqisspes6 tool i can extract all players in .csv from PES 2008 and copy them over the one i want (the gives them a market value on the core 0_text database but that's another story)

As Spanish liga is an important one and i didn't wanted to release "worldwide" if i could say, something with not really well made kits for that league (as some are impossible to reproduce like Espanyol sponsor etc.)
PM me if you don't want to say too much about the state of advancement but all i wanted to know if in you find a way to assign any kits (like on gee's PES 2008 with kits stored on "E_Sound" with practically infinite amount of kits for teams. Thanks in advance and here's my process to change kits.

I've attached in PDF the tutorial from what i plan to do, but i wanted to ask you before, even if you aren't interested a JL2008 version with Bundes would be awesome ;)

Edit: about that method it's a bit assigning kits but the numbers of would remain the same : so my idea was to choose the hardest kits to reproduce vs the easiest to make a plan (for example : Celtics kits > easy, no sponsor / Espanyol kits, hard, irreproducible sponsor even with an editor)

I will try for sure. What is better in WE7i?

Everything is more balanced, a bit more physical, transfers (summer) are done, still some weird stats and personnally i wanted to replace all players stats with the one from WE8 but it's acceptable.
Some added animations too i forgot, pretty important as PES3 is, for me at least pretty rigid in animation transition : you feel it a bit less in WE7 weirdly and definitively less in WE7I Jap

Only thing that puts me off from WE7/PES3 is the AI tendency to do the same move before crossing, they cross way too often but thats how football was back then i guess lol

but i really like how many organic fouls there is during a match from simple body to body contacts, it seems that it was toned down in future games.

In PES6 you can "unlicense" all teams and change emblem and kits through the OF. Is this possible in PES2008 and JLWE2008CC?

Just had 2 crazy back to back games in JLWE2008, i really dont want to sound bias towards this game but its the most i had fun with a football game for a long time, even though i wish the physics were more like PES 6.

First game,
Whole game till 2-1 we were completely dominated and second to every duel, but then a totally scrappy goal in 57 minute turned the flow around, right after the goal Nagoya Grampus's keeper got sent off but the man that was on a 4 game scoring streak couldnt convert the penalty,
but Nagoya Grampus playing with 10 men changed the formation to ultra defensive while keeping only on striker up top.
This meant that the game become pretty one sided, managed to win 2-3 after Suganuma redemeed himself and kept his goal scoring streak.

Second game,
it honestly felt like a total goal fest with keepers doing a lot of job to keep the score somewhat respectable (for a boxing day standards).
It might be a small thing but i like how the foul looked leading to the penalty that made it 2-0 (with Suganuma this time scoring and extending his streak!), but things change fast in football. That freekick goal from their centerback is trully wonderfull.

It's the only game you talk about 😄

I did a master league season a while back with Grampus although it was JLWE10AC. Maybe you would prefer that over 2008 as it's similar to WE10.. which is similar to PES 6.

I have been a solid JLWE2008CC supporter on here, thats true haha.

Even though WE8LE,WE10 and PES3 hold a special place in my heart and i play them from time to time, especially WE8LE where i continue my ML that is going for a year now, its hard for me to stick to other PES other than JLWE2008CC because of the AI that i experienced in that game, provides a good and consistent challenge.

The one true flaw of the PS2 era games, is it feels a bit rushed. Every player is very much in a hurry. It’s difficult to hold the ball. I wish I could be a bit more methodical and slow building up an attack.

Ah so basically you want the physics of PES 6 but the AI of JLWE2008.

I'm a fan of PES/WE2008 but I don't think there's anything in-between PES6/WE10 apart from what I mentioned. Maybe there is a K league version of WE10 that could have slightly different gameplay or physics but I don't recall playing it and can't seem to find it.
@Dooky will probably know if it exists.

I prefers by miles physics in JLWE2008 (all players in PES 6 seems weightless the game is so fast paced in term of dynamism) but it's acceptable in JLWE10. A good game too, a bit like a final evolution 1st part and JLWE2007 is the 2nd part.
Of course for most people PES 2008 is just a PES 6 with a better balance but they're not like us analysing even net physics and player's underwears.... Then we plays A LOT more than normal gamers.
I really don't like PES 6 but JLWE10 is totally on the "good versions" part, there's a defense and no more counter-bugs all along the match. Tempo in JLWE2007 is toned down through, but physics are similar.

JLWE2007 could please him as the AI is okay, but the ball physics is far from 2008 version in terms of variety.
Now, even if there's less variety too i love WE9 ball physics. A tiny bit heavier than Pes5. Even if in terms of fun, i prefers the European version, okay it's more direct but WE9 is the most defensive old-gen version. It's a 15 minutes per matchs version.
And i don't like more than 12 minutes games, always ben sad there's not the option in PES when i tried Fifa even in the past.

Yes, there's no more K-League after JLWE9; in fact the 2 only games featuring K-League teams are that one and JLWE8.
There's also a Korean WE9 (not WE9LE) with Korean NT campaign mode instead of Japan. For the F i give...
