The Retro FIFA Discussion Thread (All FIFA games by EA are welcome!)

I also wasn't aware of that feature in FIFA 98 (or, probably, just totally forgot about it).
I thought indeed that the first "non-managerial" game to introduce something like that was Virtua Striker 2 (I think that the first release of Virtua Striker 2 didn't have such a feature and it got added from its '98 incarnation onwards, but I might need to be corrected on that).
I'm leaving Sensible Soccer out of the discussion because as far as I know you could change everything kit-related before matches (even have Milan play in a white and black striped shirt if you wanted to).

Too bad that we then lost it until PES 5 (and then that feature disappeared never to return again, if not for mods like the Revolution Mod).

The very interesting thing about that FIFA 98 feature (which not even PES 5 did add) is that it didn't just switch shorts from home to away. It actually added a different pair of shorts to the home kit to avoid clashing!
Surely technically it shouldn't be that difficult to do that nowadays... I mean, even if you don't want to program an anti-clashing logic, just give us a variant of each kit already and we'll gladly sort it out manually before each match!

Thanks guys! But there are league since Serie A to Serie C, not Serie D... I would like to create divisions until amateur league....
A, B, C, D, Eccellenza, Promozione and Amateur... Is it possible with Creation Master 16? Because I tried from many weeks, but without success...

Technically not FIFA but I was playing UEFA Champions League 2006/2007 on PC (the Xbox 360 version is better IMO) and saw this recreation of the 2005/2006 final in the game, thought it was quite cool and EA definitely wouldn't be able to pull this off now as the gameplay would look ridiculous 😆

football gaming has regressed so much. This is incredible

On a related note - man, I feel this guy's pain. So much.

I’ve tried pretty much every football game on PC at this point. FIFA 14, 15, 17, 23, now FC 25/26, plus PES 2017 and PES 2021 with a ton of mods. All I wanted was a good modern career mode, that’s it. Older FIFAs actually had decent career modes and mods help a lot, but let’s be honest, the gameplay just feels old now. You can feel the age no matter how much you mod it. Newer FIFA/FC games should be better, but somehow they’re worse. Licenses are all over the place, international football is basically dead, and some decisions make zero sense. Like… why can’t I even buy Neymar in career anymore?

Gameplay in the newer FCs also feels awful. Every year it feels more scripted, more sluggish, more RNG. It just doesn’t feel like football anymore.

PES 2021 (Football Life 26 with extra mods) was honestly the closest thing to a complete game. Gameplay is miles ahead, immersion is good, but even that isn’t perfect. No new UCL format, transfer AI is dumb, clubs make stupid moves, and competitions still feel stuck in the past.

At this point football gaming feels like it’s at an all-time low. There’s no one game that just gets it right. I know I’m asking for a lot, probably too much, but man… it shouldn’t be this hard to find a proper career mode in 2026. If anyone has any suggestions, I’m listening.

Correct. FIFA 2003 was the first to introduce kit selection. And also the first to introduce third kits. It's worth noting though, FIFA 98 had an automatic kit clashing system

I never paid attention to that; I thought only PES 5 had that sort of attention to detail.
You'd think they wouldn't have that given how hands-on the editor is and the possibility to put the same color of shorts on both kits.
I need to check it out.

FIFA 11 was great too, and it has the added bonus of having a seasonal patch for basically every year from 2011 to 2023.
11 is great and I nearly mentioned it in my post. 12 has the benefit of more modern controls (standing tackle versus just smashing into the player PES style) as well as sliders. But still an excellent game.

Afaik, FIFA 2001, 02 and 02 wc had auto kit clashing as well. That's how I used to play with away brazil kit.

Can anyone explain why Ronaldo is not available in Brazil national team in FIFA 2003 even though he is available in Real Madrid? Had to be the worst thing to happen in that game, especially after wc 02 and Ronaldo finally getting a real face in that game, but you can't play with him on Brazil 💀

Google's AI suggests:
  • Injury & Transfer Timing: Although Ronaldo was the hero of the 2002 World Cup (which concluded in June 2002), he was recovering from major knee injuries and had just transferred from Inter Milan to Real Madrid in September 2002. FIFA 2003 development often locked rosters earlier in the year, or because he was not playing regularly for club/country immediately following the World Cup, he was omitted from the National Team selection in the game.
  • The "Three Rs" Missing: The game featured the "Three Rs" (Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho) in their club teams, but the Brazil national team roster in FIFA 2003 is often noted for missing Ronaldo and Rivaldo, often focusing on younger talent or different selections available at the time of manufacturing.
The team in game doesn't look too dissimilar to the squad used in friendlies around January-February 2002. Which seems miles early to lock in a squad, but it's quite likely, so they could focus on all the club transfers in the summer months

It was so dumb to not include them. And also baffling to not have international selection either. This singlehandedly ruined FIFA 2003 for me.

Another post it's great to see is going viral (well, 4k+ likes):

It's so true.

When I see the AI doing things like this again, I'll believe we're back in a good era.

Fun fact: The AI defender is moving forward at the very moment the guy is starting to press the pass button. I'm quite happy stuff like this isn't in the game anymore.

Anyone want to know why I still play FIFA 14 on PS4, this video is why. (vanilla, semi passing, no power assist, semi shooting and tweaked slightly 1st touch, pass speed etc, so shot and pass percentages are quite realistic).

Some context. I'm home to Man City, they are ahead of me for that last Euro spot, I need a win to catch up, if I lose I don't fancy me to finish above them.
I'm 1-0 down from a clever short corner. My right winger Hulk is bursting into the box, at pace on his thunderous left, looking to equalise, trouble is brewing...

I have played 14 loads, don't remember ever seeing a save quite like that. I was genuinely shocked and than happy when I saw it in real-time. Even the little jump by my striker to evade the shot is a cool little detail. I find 14 is full of these cool little details that other football games don't quite have. You can feel the developers really tried with this game.

Thankfully there are editors for that. Even with Creation Centre that could be done.
What really got my goat was them having neither Netherlands (just because they failed to qualify? come on!) nor Japan (I mean come ON, they co-hosted the whole thing, did Konami just hog the JFA license for themselves, didn't they want to go foreign anymore or what?!). That's why the first thing I did on my 2003 was bring them back, as you can see a few pages back.
Next, bring the Eredivisie back. I seriously don't know why EA was screwing up so much around that time; if you ask me what was the closest to perfect team selection at the time, you know what I'll answer? This Is Football.
I mean, look at this:

No offense to the Scandinavians out there, but the leagues here just beat theirs out of the water. Not to mention how it's more spread out across the world, and don't get me started on the international teams and "Rest of the World"; some selections are head-scratching to be sure (I mean, only ONE other South American club?!), but it is a true Rest of the WORLD and not just Rest of Europe.
These are what I'd like to replicate on FIFA 2003 at least.

Regarding Japan, you're absolutely correct. Konami held the license for the national team & kept it for their own games, but putting great detail into it.

The curious thing though, is the Japanese version of FIFA games continued to include Japan, up to 2005's Total Football 2.

The thing that confused me... The Nike swoosh. The kits up to FIFA 06 were perfect recreations of Nike kits, the 2002 template, the T90 template etc. But the swoosh was always missing from the kit. It was always very weird how you can license a team, but their kit logo was missing

I can't find any editor for Xbox port. The PC port was garbage.
