The Retro FIFA Discussion Thread (All FIFA games by EA are welcome!)

Confusingly, on PC, FIFA 12 seems to have better graphics than 13 and 14.
But ... but who said, that it's totally wrong ...

Many earlier-made games are made with more high quality, then modern. Do not matter, that this games not so cool graphically, but in the end - beautiful graphics and dull gameplay still not good. Especially now, when many developers "have access to different game-creating engines and instruments".
But having instruments - is one thing, and possibility how correct use them, how "find gold graal", how "to make a nice harmonic project" - it's a special talent definitely!

Anyone want to know why I still play FIFA 14 on PS4, this video is why. (vanilla, semi passing, no power assist, semi shooting and tweaked slightly 1st touch, pass speed etc, so shot and pass percentages are quite realistic).

Some context. I'm home to Man City, they are ahead of me for that last Euro spot, I need a win to catch up, if I lose I don't fancy me to finish above them.
I'm 1-0 down from a clever short corner. My right winger Hulk is bursting into the box, at pace on his thunderous left, looking to equalise, trouble is brewing...

I have played 14 loads, don't remember ever seeing a save quite like that. I was genuinely shocked and than happy when I saw it in real-time. Even the little jump by my striker to evade the shot is a cool little detail. I find 14 is full of these cool little details that other football games don't quite have. You can feel the developers really tried with this game.
Some other little fun developments from the same career mode.

It's a cup game against a lower league team. I think I'll give a few guys promoted from my youth team a runout, why not.

I get to see my new LB for the 1st time. He's a bloody 6ft 3inch 18yo and he chooses to be the only outfield football player in history to wear trousers every game!

As you can see, his stats are horrendous, but I'll be playing him EVERY easy cup game just cos he's such a baller and a real trendsetter.

Another reason 14 is great. Injuries. These are all long-term injuries to 4 of my best attacking players. All 4 injuries happened in-game and you actually see the injuries happen via collisions on instant replay and the guys lay on the ground afterwards while play carries on.

I seem to vaguely remember there was a Fifa game (might have even been one of their World Cup spin offs, possibly 2010), where if your keeper was sent off, and an outfield player took his jersey, the name on the back was still that of the keeper. I'm not sure of any other game that did that, tbh

I always liked that 12-14, I believe it was, the injury would be listed beside the player in the team management screen. They took it away, so now it's a mystery why your player gets injured (especially in Exhibition match)

Yeah that's correct, says all the injuries, Hulk, cruciate, Taarabt, ligament thing, Slew, collarbone etc.

Played a little 11 this morning. Damn that’s a good game. The shooting is not quite as forgiving as 12 but it plays really nicely. I quite enjoy the unpredictability of it. 50/50 challenges really feel like they can go either way. I played some lofted balls over the top of the back line and it resulted in some nice scrambles for the ball, which in a few cases, my striker won.

My experience with more modern games is that the defenders win 100% of contested balls in the air and 90% of tackles when pressuring from the side. For this to be closer to 50% is quite refreshing.

That said, I do wish this game had better pacing. By that I mean dynamics - contrast between fast and slow. This is probably something that is difficult to achieve and maybe even undesirable because it’s a video game and supposed to be fun. Plus, if playing short halves, we still need to get a few goals in.

My ideal state would be a game that has some slow moments in the middle of the field, jockeying for position, players moving around and creating space. Then fast moments when the attack breaks through and there’s chaos near the goal. Constant action is a little tiring (or maybe I’m just getting old) and spoils the truly exciting moments which are supposed to be rare.

Over the last few weeks I've tried and tried to get into one of the last 3 FC titles. Out of them all, I think 24 is the best for gameplay but it's like a different game when you do Kick Off or Career mode, Kick Off I've had some great matches yet Career mode gameplay feel sluggish and different, it's weird.

So back to 14 for me today and had a bloody blast.

I started a career as Girona. Not much money to spend, so got to wheel and deal - so refreshing not having them cut scenes and all that other crap, plus the 'enquiry' feature is such a brilliant thing.

I just love the game, the ball is so loose, you can pass into space, it's unpredictable, you can smash in absolute screamers, scuffed efforts I could go on.

I just finished my last game of the session away v Gijon. Both in around the promotion mix after about 14 games. They score a worldie, ball drops to their striker, about 25 yards out after a aerial challenge and he lumps it into the top corner.

2nd half, I'm pressing, hit the post from a corner, big scramble after and they clear it. 10 mins to go, my RW puts a cross in, it looks poor but it evaded everyone and drops to my LW steaming in, but their GK makes a superb save. They hold firm for the 1-0 win, I save the game and have a wry smile.

Love this game.

Lately i recieved this game that i wanted when i was a kid at his released and as i'm into the World Cup 2006 mood i wanted to replay the WC Qualifiers 2006 with this game.

This game have the whole European nations with their official kit and group stage, i took France and for more realism i don't want to use Thuram, Makelele and Zidane as they have announced their retirement after the Euro 2004 before they came back in August 2005.

The gameplay is... not pleasant to play as expected, because it was the very first try of EA trying to make an HD video games on the early new gen, so it was kinda experimental. But still fun to play for those kids who was living football at that time.

And i bought it because the 2006 World Cup mean a lot to me.

I don't hate the game like some seem to. The gameplay is...different. But I don't mind it. I fell in love with the visuals watching people play it on TV, like a very early e-sports style competition. The way the game looked and the kit cloth flowed, looked so cool to me as a 15-year old still with a PS2.

I'd no idea those three players retired from the national team for a year

Out of interest, is this PS4 or PC, and is this version 1.0?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been following the retro FIFA scene for a while, and with the official EA servers now completely offline for the classic titles (especially the 12-17 era), I was wondering if there are any active projects dedicated to Private Servers or Custom Matchmaking Hubs, specifically for Online Seasons mode?

We’ve seen incredible things done for other games, like:

• PES 6 (with PES6Stars) which has kept the game alive for decades.
• Counter-Strike or Battlefield (with community-run master servers).
• Need for Speed World (with Soapbox Race World).
I’m curious why we don't have a similar, unified "Master Server" project for FIFA titles like FIFA 14, 15 or 16. Is it a technical limitation of the Ignite/Frostbite engines (like Blaze/SSL encryption issues), or is the community just more focused on offline mods and career mode?

I'm on PS5 so it's the PS4 version with all the updates installed.
Have you tried installing 14 without any updates? As I think there's a big difference.

I have had to keep my PS4 on for months now. Otherwise the silly PS4 will download the update and install it before I can load the game. Even though I have tried everything to tell it to never download or install anything.

At this minute my Leicester team are in their 1st ever final. It's The FA Cup, I've everyone back and wanna counter, not working though. I just switched off a minute before HT and conceded.

I went big at the start of this season and bought in Depay, Luiz and Giovinco, but the team has performed exactly the same, we're midtable.

Lovely fight back in the 2nd half, although Villa had a pen. Fortunately they missed, as the guy tried a Panenka! I also hit the post twice...

Onto ET, already had Taarabt pull up with a muscle injury, I think I'll get more in ET, as everyone is dead on their feet.

The FA Cup final goes to pens!

I had the chance to win on pens twice, but missed my pen, twice. But then, my goalie scored the winning 9th penalty to win me my 1st ever trophy!!!

Yes, I did try it on Vanilla but I didn't notice too much different. And I got sick and tired of having to stop the updates every time it loads.

Just don't ever 'unerve' another team in the press conference. I did v Deportivo and by HT they had 4 yellow cards, they literally kicked me all game. Ended up a 2-2 draw, I scored in the 92nd min and then they got a 96th min equaliser.

That's another great thing about 14, the added on time. I get anything from 1 min to 5 depending how the game has gone.

Also, offsides. Have you noticed that even if the lino flags, you can still play on if you switch from the offside player. Had it last night, my CF was offside. I played a cross field ball meant for him, lino flagged but it didn't go near him and went to my Winger. Game played on, so good to see.

There are just so many good little details. Yes, it don't have the bells and whistles of the new titles but I can't enjoy any other footy game the way I do this. Just hits the spot.

Wow, never seen that with the conference thing.

Yeah, the little details are everything, it's all those small things that other games didn't do that build up 14 to a fantastic product.

Yeah they announced their retirement after the disaster of the Euro 2004 and because they didn't feel being managed by Raymond Domenech who was going to be the French NT coach. But then without them the WC Qualifiers for France didn't went well and was unsure to qualify for the WC 2006, then Zidane decide to announce his comeback during the summer 2005 and help to team to qualify, and he convinced Thuram + Makélélé to come out from their retirement.

The rest is history.

Becoming a FIFA 14 fanatic here, but how can you see these clips and not be?

With other games I concede goals and I'm annoyed, here I'm like fair enough, and even often impressed by the AI doing things I don't expect.

I'm Colombia and against Uruguay. Cavani is noticeably better than most strikers I've faced. Better touch, better decision making.

Watched this Cavani turn, ballet! Completely wrongfooted me.

Simple finish, but that is such an authentic Suarez finish.

This is probably the best part of 14 for me, inertia. Using the defender's inertia against them...

Fifa 14 about PS4?

anyone has a fix for cheatengine 7.5 for fifa 16 on windows 11, it s causing fps drop and lag when running it, and the game is too fast without the speedhack.,...

The two things that would've made 14 perfect in my book would be:
* if EA had implemented trophy animations in seventh-gen like they did for the Ignite-powered versions on PS4 and XOne (nitpick)
* if the extra teams from the 2014 World Cup were playable outside Ultimate Team (which could've been totally feasible)

That aside, it was probably the last FIFA I could say I had fun with. Not discounting how well-made it was, but the fact that it was the last one to have Brazilian teams properly represented (full league, licensed players and all) might also have something to do with it.

yes, that is ps4 (next gen) fifa 14.

pc version is bad (poor ps3 port).
It took this (and the fantastic videos in this thread) to convince me to revisit the Xbox version and give the PC version a break.

My God, I'd forgotten how good it was. It breaks my heart how far (backwards) we've come.

I have a Be A Pro save on there that's one of my favourites ever, and my very first game back after 5-6 years, from kick off, the AI and I gel together like humans would.

I play as a striker pushing the defensive line, and at the very moment I think about making a run, the AI plays THIS pass (and by the way, I didn't even request it, which makes the AI spectacular IMO):

It's so organic, and so realistic, and so wonderful.

The AI now is so poor that, in Be A Pro modes, you only get the ball either when you're completely alone or (99/100 times) when you request it.

The ball weight is consistent, it's never manipulated for the sake of "fun", and so when this happens, it feels amazing.

Plus, my shot is dreadful, but it's ALLOWED to be. The game isn't holding my hand, and the outcome is the result of the ball physics as much as my attributes and controller input.

If only it has tournament modes etc. on it so I could play it with friends.

Noticed there’s some discussion here of modding FIFA on Xbox 360 and I thought I’d share a mod that permanently unlocks the EA catalogue for offline use for 2014 FIFA World Cup.

This game had an in-game catalogue of game items that you could unlock with gameplay (eg. retro shirts, soccer balls etc). However, the unlock process relied on a connection to the EA servers to be able to unlock them, and also to use them afterwards, as even if you had unlocked them before, when your console was offline, you couldn't access the previously unlocked items.

With the EA servers now permanently shut off for this game, there is no way to get these working anymore on a retail Xbox 360 console, however, with a modded locale.big file, you can get these unlocked for offline use on a Xbox 360 that has been modded via RGH/JTAG, or for Xenia emulator on a PC.

These require the use of an extracted ISO version of the game, not the converted GOD version (as with GOD, you don’t have access to change game files).

Simply replace data/loc/locale.big with the modded locale.big provided. This mod should also be Media ID agnostic (i.e. the mod works across all media IDs - let me know if any issues crop up with a particular version of 2014 FIFA World Cup).
Many thanks for easier preserving of this gem of a game :APPLAUD:.

Haven't seen a tutorial more in depth so for those also modding on emulator for the 1rst time, i managed to apply this using the "extract-xiso" tool to extract the .iso of the game via the cmd command on the "extract-xiso" folder:
...>.\extract-xiso.exe ""
being: ... = folder directory and "" = The .iso name. ex: "example.iso".
This generates a new folder and you just replace the indicated file in this previous message.
To run it on Xenia Manager just add it on the + icon and select the recently game folder created and select the "default.xex" file.
And a new instance of the game should appear in the emulator so just run it and thats it.

Som best game play, best content etc between FIFA 08-09-10-11?
Im not interested in installing them all, one would be enough.
